Babel is a beautiful film, both complex and simple the viewing experience is complex, as you try to make sense of a mosaic of apparently disconnected stories in morocco, mexico and japan. Similarities: both traditions emphasize the suffering in the world siddhartha one of the first things to spur him to his original asceticism is the suffering of the people surrounding him when he leaves the luxury of his life ultimately, both traditions reject the value of the material world. Babel is my film of the year, and probably the best film i've seen in quite a few years the film looks at relationships, from husband/wife, parent/children, brother/sister and plays around the themes of love in adversity the characters are all interlinked in a very random way, it's a little like 10 degrees of separation.
This is the cinema of escalating crises, in which the whims and misfortunes of people on any given continent can have a profound impact thousands of miles away the film’s very first scene involves that most cinematic of weapons, a rifle. Strictly speaking, this brilliant spoof is a “brian” movie and not a “jesus” movie its portrait of jesus as such is as reverential as they come but in its depiction of the young man mistakenly taken for the messiah, life of brian both uses and mocks the clichés of the jesus film genre, to hilarious effect.

Comparing world religions add to my study list - briefly identify the major similarities and differences in hinduism and our beliefs buddhism first, all beings are caught up in maze of suffering second, the chain of suffering is caused by one’s actions third, the suffering can be stopped. Babel is an immensely subtle piece of storytelling which alerts us to the dangers of cruder ones, as regimes and mainstream media read events too fast and too simplistically apart from anything else, the people in this film literally do not understand each other. The name can be the same, even share similar attributes and go by a different name, but all the wishful thinking and rose-colored glasses in the world will not make two completely different things, people, or whatever, the same.
